Jets Mini Camp June 13-15
The Jets OTA (Organized Team Activities) workouts begin Tuesday May 23. There are still a number of questions that really need to be addressed before they start training camp in July. The glaring need for the tight end position is stunning. They did draft Jordan Leggett from Clemson who everyone seems to think is a steal but the scouts say his blocking is very suspect. Austin Seferian-Jenkins is suspended for two games at the beginning of the season. Besides Legget and Seferian-Jenkins, the tight ends on the roster are:
Braedon Bowman, Anthony Firkser, Brian Parker, Eric Tomlinson, Jason Vander Laan.
Not household names but with new offensive coordinator John Morton coming in, the tight end situation is becoming a yearly issue and almost as bad as the quarterback position. I am convinced the Jets did a good job in the draft but I was hoping in this tight end rich year they would have picked up a tight end in the second or third round. We’ll see what happens. An interesting name I like who was signed out of college as an undrafted free agent last year is Jason Vander Laan. He was a quarterback in college (Ferris State) and set the NCAA all-divisions record for career rushing yards by a quarterback, 5,953. He also set the NCAA Division II record for rushing yards in a single season by a quarterback (1,607 in 2013). He was let go by the Jets last August but resigned again in January. This guy has talent and we’ll know pretty quick if he can make the adjustment to tight end. Sadly he may be the best quarterback on the Jets roster.
The Quarterback Carousel Continues
We have been told by Todd Bowles that the quarterback position will be open competition this summer between Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Let’s see if he is a man of his word. One indicator is if all three quarterbacks get reps with the first unit then it is open for the taking. If he keeps one QB with the first unit then this whole thing is already pre-determined.
All the off-season news about Christian Hackenberg has been positive which is what you’d expect. It has been reported that he spent the off-season in California with Jordan Palmer who is his personal quarterback coach. Palmer, a former journeyman QB himself not far removed as a player, is the younger brother of Carson Palmer and has a good reputation as a trainer. Boy I’d love to be able to read his mind or hear the conversations he has had on the phone with the Jets.
Bryce Petty says he is 100% ready to go after surgery repaired his non-throwing arm. I’d love Petty to get the job. He has the right mental make-up but I just don’t think he is starter material based on the small sample size we saw. I hope I’m wrong.
Josh McCown comes across like a real gentleman. He has said all the right things since signing with the Jets. He has the reputation of being a real good locker room teammate around the league. Here are his stats:
In 2013 with the Bears, McCown only played in 8 games, starting only 5 but had 13 TD passes and only one INT. His QB rating was 109.

Jamal Adams LSU 1st Round:
Adams attended Hebron High School in Carrollton, Texas. During his final two years, he had 138 tackles and seven interceptions on defense and 20 touchdowns on offense. In his senior year, Hebron finished 8–4 on the season, advancing to the UIL 5A Division II Area final at AT&T Stadium, where they lost 42–21 to Cedar Hill. Adams was rated by Scout.com as a five star recruit and was ranked among the top ten overall recruits in his class.
Adams played in all 13 games with two starts as a true freshman at LSU in 2014 and had 66 tackles and a sack. As a sophomore, he was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection as a safety by the Associated Press and SEC coaches In three years with the Tigers, Adams helped continue LSU's legacy of "DBU," standing out immediately and developing into arguably the most well-rounded defensive back in the country. Adams earned first team All-America honors as well as first team All-Southeastern Conference recognition in 2016, recording a career-high 76 tackles, including 7.5 for loss. With Adams leading the charge, LSU allowed just 16 touchdowns over the 2016 season (12 games), lowest in the FBS. This included a 29-9 victory over Louisville and Lamar Jackson in the Citrus Bowl in which the Heisman Trophy winner was kept out of the end zone for the first time all season.

Marcus Maye Florida 2nd Round:
Ready-made safety frame with muscular build and long arms. Really instinctive with above-average field vision and feel for the game. Eyes dart back and forth from quarterback to receiver. Correlates quarterback's eyes and actions to a corresponding route and gets the early jump. Plays with good pattern recognition from both man and zone. Credited with a pass breakup or interception on more than 21 percent of his targets as a starter. Has speed to burst from sideline to sideline. Rangy tackler with in-play endurance for extended chases across field. Welcomes physical aspects of position. Sheds blockers quickly. Showed improved patience and diligence as tackler. Trustworthy as last line of defense.

Green Tidbits: …..Jordan Jenkins, the Jets outside linebacker has been working hard in the off-season on his pass rushing. Hopefully he is not another Demario Davis…. I still have high hopes for defensive lineman Lawrence Thomas. Un-drafted out of Mich. St. he lit it up in pre-season and was playing well in 1st game until an injury shelved him for the season….Jets think they might got a good one last year in offensive tackle Brandon Shell……My friends in Dallas tell me if CB Morris Claiborne can stay on the field, he’ll be the Jets best player in the secondary….I like it that the Jets kept David Harris….I’m not sure if new OC John Morton should insist on the West Coast offense….Robby Anderson is very lucky I’m not his father….
